How do I move Codex to a new Windows PC?

Close Codex on the old PC, create one local .codex backup with Codex Transfer, copy the portable EXE and backup to the new PC, install and close Codex there, then restore the archive. Supported old Windows user paths are mapped to the new profile.

Does Codex Transfer back up sessions, settings and projects?

Yes. It can include the local Codex home with sessions, settings, skills, plugins and file-based authentication data, selected project folders, and optionally SSH and global Git configuration.

Are backup contents uploaded to VI-IT?

No. Backup and restore data stays local. The application only requests public GitHub release metadata at startup to check for updates.

Is a password required?

No. A password is optional, but a strong password is recommended because a backup without one is not effectively protected from anyone who can access the file.

Clean project leftovers before backup

Green rebuildable findings are preselected. Yellow and red findings require deliberate selection, and permanent deletion requires a second confirmation.

Security and realistic limits

Password-protected archives use AES-256-CBC encryption, HMAC-SHA-256 integrity verification and PBKDF2-SHA-256 key derivation. A password is optional, but a backup without one is not effectively protected.

Device-bound Windows credentials and browser sessions may require signing in again. Cloud ChatGPT conversations, memories, custom GPTs and subscription data remain associated with the ChatGPT account and are not recreated by a local backup.

The portable EXE is currently unsigned. Download only from the official GitHub release, verify the SHA-256 checksum and never publish a `.codex` backup.
